Sunday, June 12, 2016. Pulse, a night club which, for more than 15 years, had become a place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community to gather, became a target of terror from a gunman who released fire from an AR-15 assault rifle in a blind rage toward the bar that is located in Orlando, Florida, USA. The act killed 50 people and injured 53 others (Kompas.Com).
Local media stated that the gunman carried out the shooting terror based on his hate against LGBT group. It is an irony for the United States, a place that strongly encourages the fulfillment of LGBT rights within its country, and even worldwide, to experience such terror.
We, on behalf of Indonesian Sexual Diversity Movement (GKSI) and civil society groups in Indonesia, as parts of the global citizens of the world, are strongly condemning the act of terror. We would like to extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to all victims of this tragedy and their families. Because, for whatever reason, someone must not do any violence against others. We also refuse to link this act with the perpetrator’s religion. For us, this act was a pure act of terror based on hate. There is no religion that teaches terrorism. This terror is a sign that, wherever they are, whether it’s in a developing or a developed country, LGBT are always living in insecurity.
Therefore, we would like to ask the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to:
- Actively participate in voicing, promoting, and doing campaign on LGBT rights, both in the national and international level.
- Systematically anticipate any possibility of similar act of violence to happen against LGBT and other marginalized groups in Indonesia.
- Create a regulation to ensure that LGBT group will be protected from any violence and discrimination in private and public spaces.
- Engage the public, especially religious leaders, to keep on developing education of peace which involves values of non-violence and non-discrimination against anyone, especially LGBT groups.
Best Regards in Diversity,
